Abstract

Raan-Hann provides an ethnographic study of the Portuguese village (kampung) of Tugu in Jakarta (Batavia). Being Indonesians, who consider themselves of Portuguese descent, reveals the complexity of colonised spaces (here not Portuguese but primarily Dutch) with layered histories. The early settlers of Tugu Village around 1661 consisted of Mardijkers (liberated slaves). Known to ethnographers primarily for their music (Keroncong Tugu), Tan’s ethnographic study includes kinship terms and naming in this community and was based on fieldwork in Jakarta and secondary data from historical narratives, household surveys and linguistic studies.
