Abstract

Teaching for social justice requires patience, critical reflexivity, and a willingness to adapt to tensions that arise in our classrooms. Guided by Critical Race Theory, this chapter engages in self-study as a form of counter storytelling to navigate the shifting waters of social justice teacher education. In particular, the author explored the ways in which her racialized experiences as a teacher educator have informed her curriculum choices, course design, and teaching practices. By sharing stories of resistance, heightened emotions, and the persistence of White dominance in the classroom, she considered how teacher educators can reconceptualize their practice and employ meaningful strategies within a context of persisting epistemological and institutional racism.
