Abstract

Two female teacher educators of color in a post-apartheid South Africa use storywork in self-study to provide personal accounts of lived experiences. Masinga, a Black teacher educator at a traditional university, and Hiralaal, an Indian teacher educator at a university of technology, share their experiences through storied accounts that highlight rewards and challenges in post-apartheid South Africa. Their voices then converge in a dialogue during which they reflect on their individual story pieces, followed by a discussion of their reflective dialogue. Writing personal stories about lived experiences enabled them to engage with histories of their families, communities, educational experiences, socio-political contexts and teacher educator experiences, as well as how these experiences influenced their evolving identities. The chapter demonstrates how using storywork in self-study can help broaden understanding of evolving identities and transform understandings of the past, present and future and of ourselves in relation to our dynamic contexts.
