Souvent, dans les Essais de Montaigne, on retrouve chez les bÃªtes les mÃªmes coutumes et les mÃªmes pratiques institutionnelles que chez les hommes. Cet anthropomorphisme entraÃ®ne pourtant chez lâessayiste une rÃ©flexion sociale sur la sociÃ©tÃ© de son temps par espÃ¨ces interposÃ©es. Cette transposition de lâhumain vers les bÃªtes permet ainsi Ã Montaigne de rÃ©flÃ©chir sur de nouveaux modÃ¨les sociaux, selon un mode opÃ©ratoire trÃ¨s montaignien, Ã savoir la projection dans le corps et lâesprit de lâautre. La chatte de Montaigne offre sur ce point un cas typique dâinvestissement de lâautre (quâil soit animal ou humain). La sociabilitÃ© des bÃªtes reprÃ©sente donc pour Montaigne un vÃ©ritable laboratoire dâexpÃ©rimentations et de rÃ©flexions sociales qui lui permettent de se considÃ©rer comme un penseur social par le Â«âtruchementâÂ» de lâobservation des bÃªtes.

In Montaigneâs Essais, we often find in animals the same customs and the same institutional practices as in men. However, this form of anthropomorphism leads Montaigne to a social reflection on the society of his time by interposed species. This transposition from the world of humans to the realm of animals allows Montaigne to reflect on possible new social models, according to a particular operating mode, namely the experimental projection into the body and the mind of a generic other. On this point, Montaigneâs cat offers a typical case of investment by the other (whether animal or human). The sociability of animals therefore represents for Montaigne a veritable laboratory of experiments and social reflections that allow him to become a social thinker through the observation of animals.
