Sauf dans lâEcbasis cuiusdam captivi per tropologiam et dans la Farce du Veau, le veau ne joue pas un grand rÃ´le dans la littÃ©rature mÃ©diÃ©vale animale profane, ni dans les ouvrages didactiques Ã morale chrÃ©tienne, comme les bestiaires, ni dans les encyclopÃ©dies. Il en est autrement dans la littÃ©rature religieuse, oÃ¹ il apparaÃ®t en animal Ã symbolique doubleâ: victime innocente, emblÃ¨me du Christ, et symbole du diable, surtout figurÃ© par le Veau dâor des HÃ©breux. Dans les adaptations bibliques en ancien franÃ§ais, cet Ã©pisode de lâExode prÃ©sente le Veau dâor tantÃ´t comme statue immobile, tantÃ´t comme idole animÃ©e, comme le montre aussi lâiconographie mÃ©diÃ©vale. LâÃ©tude de ce rÃ©cit montre que lâapport des sources juives dans les Â«âtranslationsâÂ» est plus grand que lâon ne lâa souvent cruâ; elle nous permet Ã©galement dâÃ©tablir une source importante de la Bible de Geufroi de Paris.

With the exception of the Ecbasis cuiusdam captivi per tropologiam and the Farce du Veau, the calf does not often appear in French medieval profane animal literature, neither in didactic, moral works, like the bestiaries, nor in the encyclopaedias. In religious literature, however, the calf appears to be an animal of double natureâ: both an innocent victim, emblem of Christ and symbol of the devil, particularly as represented by the Golden Calf of the Hebrews. In the biblical adaptations in Old French, this episode of Exodus presents the Calf sometimes as an immobile statue, and sometimes as an animated idol, as seen also in medieval iconography. The study of this account in the texts presented here demonstrates that the contribution of Jewish sources in the Old French biblical translations is more important than was often assumedâ; it also enables us to display an important source of the Bible of Geufroi de Paris.
