A comparer la fable des Deux Coqs (VII/12) aux quelque dix lignes de Millot qui lui ont servi de source, on constate que La Fontaine ajoute trois Ã©lÃ©ments essentiels. Sa version esquisse dâabord, pendant une dizaine de vers, un rapprochement incongru entre la basse-cour et le monde dâHomÃ¨reâ: la concurrence parodique avec lâÃ©popÃ©e, qui est un ressort comique majeur des Fables, sây dÃ©veloppe rarement avec une telle ampleur. Les neuf vers suivants racontent la retraite du coq vaincu, remplie dâefforts dont Millot ne souffle mot et que la suite montrera parfaitement inutilesâ; on sait comment les desseins trop laborieusement prÃ©parÃ©s des Fables se rÃ©duisent dâordinaire Ã autant dâaffairements ridicules. AprÃ¨s quoi La Fontaine rÃ©amÃ©nage encore la morale de la fable, que Millot avait formulÃ©e dans un lexique assez pieux et dont il propose une version rigoureusement profane.

When comparing Jean de La Fontaineâs fable The Two Cocks (VII/12) with the circa ten lines by Millot that formed his source, it appears that La Fontaine added three essential elements. First of all, his version devotes some ten verses to a remarkable comparison between the world of poultry and that of Homer. Parody of the epic genre is a major comical element in the Fables, but it rarely reaches the level it does here. The following nine verses recount the efforts â not mentioned by Millot â of the defeated and retreating cockerel, which turn out to be perfectly useless. This passage on a well-prepared scheme that turns into a series of ridiculous undertakings is typical of the Fables. Finally, La Fontaine remodels Millotâs moral, written in a pious vocabulary, into a strongly profane one.
