In historical societies horse power was essential for transport, travel, agriculture and warfare; and it is because of this great importance that many manuscripts and books were written about the handling and care of horses. Two leading works from the Middles Ages are presented and discussed here, written respectively by Lorenzo Rusio around 1340, and by Giordano Ruffo in 1251. Their works were already widespread as manuscripts, and later even more so as printed books. Conclusions from the texts and comparison between different manuscripts and printed editions, including the illustrations, are the subject of this article.

Dans le passÃ©, la puissance du cheval Ã©tait essentielle pour le transport, lâagriculture et la guerre et câest Ã cause de cette grande importance que de nombreux livres ont Ã©tÃ© Ã©crits sur la manipulation et les soins des chevaux. Deux Åuvres mÃ©diÃ©vales de premier plan sont prÃ©sentÃ©es et discutÃ©es ici, Ã©crites respectivement par Lorenzo Rusio vers 1340, et par Giordano Ruffo en 1251. Leurs Åuvres connaissaient une large diffusion, manuscrite puis imprimÃ©e. Les conclusions des deux textes et une comparaison de diffÃ©rents manuscrits et Ã©ditions imprimÃ©es, y compris leurs illustrations, font lâobjet de cet article.
