Dans lâÅuvre de BarthÃ©lemy Aneau (vers 1510-1561), les animaux sont Ã©voquÃ©s pour communiquer un savoir essentiel aux Ãªtres humains. Il en est ainsi dans Lyon Marchant, Â«âsatyre franÃ§oiseâÂ» montÃ©e au collÃ¨ge de la TrinitÃ© Ã Lyon. La ville marchande y apparaÃ®t sous la forme du roi des animaux. Ã travers lâÃ©quivoque, lâauteur exploite â et exhibe Ã son public â les richesses du franÃ§ais. Dans son combat pour la langue maternelle, Aneau sâinspire notamment de CicÃ©ron, dont il lit les ouvrages dans les Ã©ditions commentÃ©es procurÃ©es par un rÃ©gent du collÃ¨ge Sainte-Barbe Ã Paris, Jacques-Louis dâEstrebay.

Lyon Marchant est suivi dâune lettre quâaurait Ã©crite CicÃ©ron peu avant dâÃªtre assassinÃ©. LÃ oÃ¹ la satire peut Ãªtre considÃ©rÃ©e comme un exercice dâactio oratoire, la lettre â traduite par Aneau â est un Ã©chantillon dâactio au sens de rÃ©quisitoireâ: câest ainsi quâelle avait Ã©tÃ© prÃ©sentÃ©e par dâEstrebay. Un dizain sert de passerelle entre la satire et la lettre en convoquant un cortÃ¨ge dâanimaux expirants dont les cris symbolisent lâÃ©loquence passionnÃ©e de lâorateur.

In the works of BarthÃ©lemy Aneau (circa 1510-1561), animals are often presented as bearers of human wisdom. This is the case in Lyon Marchant, a âsatireâ staged at Trinity College in Lyon. The commercial city here takes on the form of a walking lion. Ambiguity thus becomes a means to showcase the riches of the French language. In his efforts to promote his mother tongue, Aneau follows the lead of Cicero, whose works he reads in the modern edition of the Parisian scholar Jacques- Louis dâEstrebay.

Lyon Marchant is followed by a letter supposedly written by Cicero shortly before his violent death. The satire can be considered an exercise in oratorical expression or actio, whereas the letter, translated by Aneau, is a sample of actio in the sense of accusation. This is how the letter was interpreted by dâEstrebay in his commentary. A dizain provides the link between satire and letter. In these ten lines, a procession of dying animals represents by their death cry the oratorâs passionate eloquence.
