Abstract

International students in the global south have received minimum attention. However, in the global dimension and the African context, 21st century universities are expected to play crucial roles in the development, growth and learning of their students as well as make the learning environment enabling for their students. Therefore, this paper presents and explores black international students’ resilient stories amid the diverse adversities experienced by them in a selected 21st century South African university. Meanwhile, the importance of acknowledging multiple voices of international students mostly who were purposively and conveniently selected to represent their group has always been taken for granted. However, this study employed a qualitative case study approach as well as the Photovoice and focus group discussion method to elucidate the lived experiences of twelve black international students in a South African university and the factors that contributed to their resilience amid the adversities. The findings reveal that international students experienced diverse challenges within their host environment which affected their learning and development negatively. The study also reveals that they developed various adaptive coping strategies which enabled them to navigate their challenges, improve their general wellbeing and achieve academic excellence. It is concluded that Black international students who attended 21st century African universities employed their strong characteristics, their active participation and collective agency to enhance their general wellbeing and to ensure their academic success. Furthermore, I insist on the importance of using photovoice to provide multiple representation of lived experiences.
