Abstract

The chapter explores pervasive issue of sexual misconduct in Zimbabwean educational institutions and its adverse effects on students’ academic performance, especially in teacher training colleges. Grounded in Homan’s social exchange theory, this chapter reveals how authority figures exploit their power to gain sexual favours from female students. Conversely, it also highlights instances where female students leverage sexual advances for academic benefits or scholarships. Key drivers identified include substance abuse, inadequate security, weak law enforcement, poverty, fear of failure, and indecent dressing by female students. These factors contribute to a culture of vulnerability and silence among victims. The impact of sexual misconduct on female students is profound, leading to psychological issues like depression, anxiety, and loss of self-esteem, as well as social and academic detriments such as diminished trust and poor performance. To combat this, we suggest strategies like enhancing security measures, aligning sexual harassment laws with educational contexts, establishing policies and oversight boards, creating multi-stakeholder bodies, and providing counselling to victims and communities. Additionally, it advocates for disqualifying perpetrators from their positions to ensure a safe learning environment and calls for further research to address this critical issue.
