Abstract

The chapter explores the importance of diversity and inclusion in higher education in Sub-Saharan Africa, a region endowed with rich cultural diversity in terms of changing demography, culture, ethnicity, gender, religion, immigration, migration, social movement, economics, and political instability. Higher education institutions have become critical in preparing future generations for active roles in all facets of life and also addressing regional challenges occasioned by pandemics, climate change and other natural disasters, hence it has become imperative to create inclusive educational spaces essential for promoting equitable access, driving innovations and enhancing social cohesion. This chapter employs a narrative review methodology, synthesizing existing literature, policies, and case studies to critically examine diversity and inclusion in higher education in Sub-Saharan Africa. The chapter examines studies, current practices and policies in the context of Sub-Saharan African countries and challenges faced by marginalized groups as well as articulating efforts that demonstrate positive impacts of diversity and inclusion in higher education. The chapter reiterates the need for action by policymakers and higher education institutions to construct a narrative of transformative agenda in which diversity and inclusion are critical pillars of academic and social development in Sub-Saharan Africa.
