Abstract

This study explored the reflection of university experiences for international postgraduate students in their academic learning at a South African university. This study adopted a qualitative approach and used a case study as a research design. The focus group discussions and photo-voice method were employed as tools to generate data. Purposive and convenience sampling techniques were useful to select eight full-time participants as sample size in this study (N = 8, 4 males and 4 females; ages ranged from 28 to 47 years old; 4 Masters and 4 Doctoral). The thematic findings suggested that the university setting was considered as both an enabling and constraining learning environment. The findings further showed that the international postgraduate students developed personal and academic skills that shaped their learning, enabled them to achieve their academic goals, and contributed to their growth and career development. This study also revealed that these students are ‘victims of pathology’ in experiencing only hardship in their host environment, hardship that negatively affects their learning. The study concludes that the interrelationships and interactions with people, resources, and environment helped them to develop their personal experiences, improve their knowledge, develop skills and enable behaviour change to achieve their academic goals.
