Abstract

The exponential growth in science and technology results from the 4th industrial revolution and globalization. This speedy transformation in the evolving world of work has dictated the need to introspect on the adequacy of STEAM education in institutions of higher learning. It is against this background that this book chapter unearths the emphasis that has emerged on STEAM as a transformative approach to learning, and empowering students with knowledge and skills to thrive in the 21st century. So, the discussion in this book chapter draws from the concerns around the conceptualization of the core pillars of higher education. It has been in this context that higher education emphasized STEAM as part of the ‘adapted institutions of higher learning’s curriculum.’ This has given impetus to the push for education for sustainable development in institutions of higher learning. It is against this background that this book chapter is geared towards addressing STEAM education’s transformative potential through fostering innovation and industrialization within the students’ heritage. This calls for the book chapter to interrogate the following issues: lifelong learning as a concept in the context of STEAM education, theoretical issues underpinning STEAM education in institutions of higher learning, towards a transformative STEAM agenda to drive lifelong learning in institutions of higher learning, and approaches used to promote lifelong learning through STEAM education in institutions of higher learning.
