Abstract

This chapter explores the theoretical foundations underpinning the interconnected themes of internationalisation and sustainable development within the context of higher education in Southern Africa. It discusses globalization theory, world-systems theory, network theory, and cultural imperialism theory, highlighting their relevance to internationalisation processes in education, business, and cultural exchange. The chapter also examines sustainable development theory, ecological modernization theory, social-ecological systems theory, the capability approach, and triple bottom line theory, emphasizing their applications to sustainable practices and policies. By integrating these theoretical perspectives, the chapter offers a comprehensive framework for understanding and addressing the complexities of internationalisation and sustainable development. The chapter aims to provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and practitioners working to align internationalisation processes with sustainable development goals, ensuring a more equitable and sustainable future.
