Abstract

This autoethnography examines the lived experiences of an emerging Filipino female ELT leader amid tensions surrounding a racialized non-native English speaking teacher (NNEST) identity. Within the frameworks of critical race theory and leadership identity development, this chapter addresses two questions: (1) What experiences anchored my motivation to lead as a Filipino teacher in the Korean ELT context? (2) What have I learned from cultivating a transformational leadership identity in the Speaking Club to impact the lives of Filipino teachers in the Korean ELT context? Coming from a place where I wrestled with enduring barriers to belong and stay on my chosen career path, I delve into this autoethnographic reflection with the hope to contribute to global perspectives of NNESTs’ leadership identity development in non-Western ELT contexts.
