Abstract

In this chapter, I engage in an autoethnographic life history narrative to examine the impact that power, language identity, and agency have had on my female leadership identity through examination of the intersection of gender, geographical location, ethnicity, education, and language. Using intersectionality as the conceptual framework, I explore the interaction and intersection of the different systems of oppression, domination or discrimination, and privilege and their consequences on my participation and representation in my environment. An educational biography, a leadership log, a language portrait and an ideology tree were the methods to collect the narratives. Findings suggest that at the core of women leadership in TESOL in Latin America, commitment, belonging, self-awareness, self-trust, agency, and accountability determine our type of participation. Adversely, invisibility, traditional gender division of tasks, and marginalization represent challenges for the enactment of a leadership identity.
