Abstract

Students’ freedom of expression has come under scrutiny in the last decade as polarized views on a variety of subject matter pervade even in higher education. Data from surveys administered by a variety of organizations (e.g., FIRE, Heterodox Academy) suggest that students who hold perspectives that are considered different from most classmates and even professors are afraid to speak and share their perspectives. To avoid reinforcing echo chambers and group polarization, instructors should apply strategies to model and increase diversity of perspectives in the classroom. One philosophical framework that has proved useful for the author in creating a more inclusive learning environment for freedom of expression for all students is Universal Design for Learning (UDL) (CAST, 2018). The objective of the present paper is to illustrate how UDL may be operationalized to address barriers to students’ freedom of action and expression. First, empirical evidence of the problem, namely, the increasing reluctance of post-secondary students in expressing their views especially for those who hold minority perspectives is presented. Second, the motivation for designing an inclusive learning environment that explicitly incorporates freedom of action and expression is presented. Third, the operationalization of UDL in a teacher education course on Child Development and Learning is illustrated. The paper concludes with final comments on how UDL might facilitate student learning within teacher education programs.
