Abstract

This chapter describes a graduate-level language teacher education course introducing preservice and experienced teacher-learners to classroom action research (AR). Purposely designed to help teachers bridge the gap between theory and practice, the course supported participants through the process of researching issues in their classrooms while developing their capacity to conduct research and position themselves as legitimate researchers in the future. After outlining key concepts of practitioner research, we describe the course design and report on analyses of data collected during the course. Grounded in participants’ perspectives, we illustrate how the course helped teacher-learners connect theory to practice within their classroom contexts as they (1) reshaped their understanding of research, (2) considered the social impacts of their teaching, and (3) carved out new identities. We discuss multiple challenges that arose during the course and conclude with recommendations to adapt the course design for other contexts. Ultimately, we argue that AR is a key competency in teacher development that fosters ongoing reflection and equips teachers to respond to personal and pedagogical challenges in new contexts.
