Abstract

Automatic Writing Evaluation (AWE) systems have emerged as a possible solution to provide immediate feedback to learners and promote writing practice. However, AWE systems lack individualized feedback, feedback on content, and can diminish the social and communicative dimensions of writing. Thus, some researchers have advocated that AWE should be construed primarily as a complement to teacher feedback rather than a replacement – a hybrid feedback. Currently, there is a lack of research on the effectiveness of hybrid feedback in the academic writing classroom in L2 context. The study reported here, which is part of a more extensive study that examined changes in microfeatures of writing and thematic analysis of interviews, investigated quantitative data on human ratings of student writings for pre-, post- and delayed post-treatment writing tasks for groups who received hybrid feedback and teacher feedback only. In addition, students’ perception of hybrid feedback was explored. The findings show that while both groups improved their scores, the experimental group improved more, and the learners found hybrid feedback more helpful than AWE feedback because it was more specific and contingent on their needs due to teacher mediation of AWE feedback. This research provides empirical evidence on how hybrid feedback affects learners’ writing process so that teachers can better understand and improve the integration of AWE in their specific contexts.
