Abstract

Equipping prospective foreign language teachers with digital competences has become an important objective of teacher education in the 21st century (Kultusministerkonferenz, 2016; Lütge et al., 2021). There are, however, pressing issues that need to be addressed to prepare student teachers for the future: Which key competencies are required for effective English language teaching in the digital age? What types of seminars are appropriate for preparing prospective English language teachers? The present chapter addresses these questions by introducing an innovative teacher training seminar, called the digital Teaching and Learning Lab Seminar (dTLLS). The dTLLS is currently being implemented and evaluated at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany as a constituent of the project K2teach – know how to teach funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the “Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung.” The chapter will examine digital competences of prospective English language teachers, outline the pedagogical design of the dTLLS, describe its key contents and present accompanying research aimed at assessing attitudes and beliefs of seminar participants. The authors hope to inspire fellow teacher educators by providing a blueprint for the design of teacher training programs for English language teaching in the digital age.
