Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become integral to everyday life, although people are not always aware of it. Applications range from everyday helpers to assistive technology for people with special needs. It is only logical that AI will play a role in educational contexts as well. But so far, the integration of even low-threshold tools into classroom practice has been integrated only hesitantly, and has not been thoroughly researched yet. In this chapter, the authors aim to show possible applications of AI in the classroom, starting from a broad understanding of AI. Using the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom as an example, they also would like to illustrate how teachers can use AI-supported tools such as neural machine translation tools or chatbots in English lessons (as an example). The authors will also discuss their potential limitations. A further focus of the contribution is on requirements for the future of teacher training, which will also be exemplified by the training of foreign language teachers.
