Abstract

In times of high political tensions or conflicts economic sanctions have in the last years grown into a major instrument of economic warfare. As the recent sanctions have a main focus on Russia (Russia responding with countersanctions), they are directly relevant also for the Caucasus-Central Asian region. The article analyses the impact of economic sanctions, in particular if they have not been passed by the UN Security Council, but by some states or groups of states, on international commercial arbitration. It addresses both the conduct of arbitration (issues of arbitrability und applicable law) and recognition and enforcement of foreign awards.
