Abstract

The upshot of this chapter is to indicate that MT's plural at Isaiah 8.18 is wholly exceptional in referring to something other than the Exodus events. Furthermore, the combined plural form is common and so would have been familiar to anyone with any close knowledge of the biblical text. Conversely, the singular form of מוֹפֵת is most frequently used in association with prophecy and the same circle of ideas is also at least possible in the case of אוֹת. On this showing, we might expect to find the singular in Isaiah 8 and equally conclude that the scribal change to plural is more easily understood than the reverse, given the familiarity of the plural form. In addition, given that the subject of the verbless clause is plural, we could understand the unconscious pressure to substitute a plural for singular, whereas the reverse process would be unlikely.
