Abstract

A variety of Targum translation techniques account for most of the changes in meaning from MT Isa. 25.6-8 to Tg. Isa. 25.6-8 . Insofar as the early interpretation of Isaiah is concerned, if the understanding of Tg. Isa. 25.7 set forth here is accurate, then it would appear the Isaiah Targumist perceived the two greatest enemies of Israel to be foreign oppression and the practice of idolatry. Concerning the perception of the eschatological banquet in the Isaiah Targum, this interpretation of the rulers in 25.7 is in keeping with the rest of the Targum understanding of the banquet as a ?feast of strokes' and judgement, more akin to the MT Ezekiel 38-39 macabre fÃªte noir than the celebratory tone in MT Isa. 25.6-8.
