Abstract

Traditional historical-critical scholarship dealt with such incongruities by pointing to different sources in the text or to the work of redactors. The text is taken as a whole with little concern about its pre-history. In this chapter, the author asks whether traditional historical-critical readings and recent holistic literary approaches are indeed as incompatible as they at first appear, and explores the value of a more ?theological' reading. The chapter looks at each of the main pericopes of the Saul cycle and discusses different methodological approaches taken by scholars to these texts. The next pericope has a very different flavour and was quickly isolated by historical critics as coming from a different layer of the tradition. The next pericope features Saul's defeat of the king of the Ammonites. This is generally regarded as part of the early Saul cycle but is a less sympathetic picture of Saul.
