Abstract

To the casual reader, the forty-three verses which make up Genesis 36 appears to be nothing but a tedious inventory of persons and places associated with Esau who is Edom. The nobles in all societies under Roman rule played a prominent role in these politically significant celebrations and, as Targum Pseudo-Jonathan (PJ) will eventually tell us directly, Rome is genetically linked to Esau who is Edom, who lives in Seir which is Gabla, with its ?nobles'. The notion that mules, or certain sorts of mule, may be very dangerous, is clearly stated on the same page of the Talmud: R. Hanina reports that no-one had ever enquired of him about a wound caused by a white mule ( פרדה לבנה ) and had recovered.
