Abstract

In this chapter the author wish to examine the two stories in Exodus 17, the story of the spring at Massah and Meribah and the defeat of Amalek. The story of Massah and Meribah is usually interpreted as part of a series of provision stories, whilst the story of Amalek ?appears to be completely isolated from its context'. Both stories speak of a mortal threat with YHWH as saviour and Moses playing a principal role. It also shows that both stories anticipate the narratives about the making and breaking of a covenant on Mount Sinai. The story of the spring at Massah and Meribah opens with the Israelites continuing through the wilderness on their way to Sinai. The account of the battle with Amalek presents numerous difficulties, many of which appear irresolvable. At its basic form-critical level the chapter is an attack by the Amalekites and their defeat by Joshua.
