Abstract

In Christian dogma the pre-eminent textual authority is the Bible. The Bible, to be sure, ministers as authority in subtly different ways in different communions. In some forms of Protestantism it is deemed to be the ultimate, and indeed sole, court of appeal on all matters of doctrine and practice. The Hebraica veritas influenced the formation of the Church's canon. Jerome relegated to the category of Apocrypha any book in the Greek Old Testament, for which he could not find a Hebrew text among the synagogue scrolls. The textual basis of the Old Testament translations remained conservative for much longer, and did not admit significant textual changes till the second half of the twentieth century. Increasingly readings from the Dead Sea Scrolls Biblical manuscripts have found their way into the texts or footnotes of recent Bible versions.
