Abstract

The Proverbs Targum (TgProv) is probably the oddest in the whole targumic canon. The introduction to the volume of the Aramaic Bible project containing the Targum of Proverbs attempted to summarize debate over the relationship between the Targum and the Peshitta version of the book (Healey 1991: 1-2). This chapter reviews of some of the issues involved and adds some reflections on dating and linguistic environment. The mixing of Aramaic dialects, with local varieties having an impact on an Aramaic koine used by Jews, Christians and pagans, is reflected also in the Aramaic- and Syriac-script incantation bowls and the Babylonian Talmud, where archaizing also played a role. There was a variety of Aramaic dialects as well as a kind of koine and, emerging as a prestige language of scripture, Classical Syriac.
