Abstract

The compound, á½ÏÏÏÎ¿ÏÏÎ»Î¬ÎºÎ¹Î¿Î½, has two elements: á½ÏÏÏÎ± ?late summer'/?autumn', and so ?fruit', and ÏÏÎ»Î¬ÎºÎ¹Î¿Î½ ?guard-post', ?watch', a predominantly military term. Modern commentators who understand it as a means of guarding rather than of storing produce are probably right. But in Isa 1.8, it was a kind of pun, playing on á½ÏÏÏÎ¿ÏÏÎ»Î¬ÎºÎ¹Î¿Î½ as both a substitute for ÏÏÎ»Î±Î¾ and a diminutive form of á½ÏÏÏÎ¿ÏÏÎ»Î±Î¾. The verse Isaiah 24.20 comes towards the end of the opening chapter of 24-27, the so-called ?Isaiah Apocalypse'. Instead of disaster falling only on Judah/Jerusalem, as in Isa. 1, the whole world is to be devastated (24.1, 3) for the sins of its inhabitants (24.5, 16). Micah 1.6 comes within Micah's opening judgement oracle against Samaria although the passage starts with an address to the whole earth as the object of God's anger. Micah 3.12 ends a section that starts with an indictment of Israel's unjust rulers.
