âAm besten mit allen zum Fenster hinaus in den Hofâ?: Spanische Inquisition und Buchzensur

Nach einigen allgemeinen Ãberlegungen zur Entstehung und zum Mechanismus der Buchzensur in Spanien sowie zur Forschungslage beschaftigt sich der Beitrag mit der Hermeneutik der Indexregeln und der Qualifikatoren. Es folgen Ãberlegungen zum âHistorikerstreitâ Ã¼ber die Auswirkungen der Buchzensur fÃ¼r die spanische Gesellschaft. Die Spanische Inquisition wurde 1478 durch die Bulle Exigit sincerae Papst Sixtusâ IV. errichtet, um die Glaubensreinheit der Conversos aus dem Judentum und dem Islam zu Ã¼berwachen, nicht primÃ¤r, um sich um die Buchzensur zu kÃ¼mmern. Sie nahm ihre Arbeit erst 1480 auf und bestand als Institution mit kurzer Unterbrechung in den liÂberalen Phasen von 1813 und 1820 bis zu deren endgÃ¼ltigen Aufhebung am 15. Juli 1834 durch die Regentin MarÃa Cristina fort. Als um 1500 das gedruckte Buch zum typischen Mittel sozialer Kommunikation in der Renaissance avancierte und Auflagen und Verbreitung neue Dimensionen erreichten, wurde den staatlichen wie kirchlichen BehÃ¶rden klar, dass sie eine gewisse Kontrolle ausÃ¼ben mussten. Leo X. verabschiedete 1515 wÃ¤hrend des FÃ¼nften Laterankonzils die Bulle Inter sollicitudines, die den OrtsbischÃ¶fen das Privileg vorbehielt, die Druckgenehmigungen zu erteilen. Das katholische, imperiaÂle Spanien nahm sich aber die Freiheit, die Dinge anders zu regeln. Hier reservierte sich der Staat die Kontrolle Ã¼ber die Druckgenehmigungen, wahrend der Inquisition die Kontrolle des Buchmarktes a posteriori Ã¼berlassen wurde. Auch wenn es manchmal Konflikte zwischen beiden ZensurbehÃ¶rden gab â nicht zuletzt, weil die Inquisition bestrebt war, ihre Kompetenzen zu erweitern und sich in das Verfahren der Druckgenehmigung einzumischen â, so kann man sagen, dass diese Aufgabenteilung weitgehend eingehalten wurde. Gleichwohl muss man beide Aktivitaten als komplementar betrachten, denn das reibungslose Funktionieren der staatlichen und der kirchlichen Buchzensur setzt ein gemeinsames Ziel voraus: Spanien von allem frei zu halten, was den Interessen von Staat und Kirche entgegenwirken kÃ¶nnte.

Oltre ad alcune considerazioni sulla formazione e sul meccanismo della censuÂra libraria in Spagna come anche a proposito dei risultati raggiunti dalla ricerca, la presente relazione si concentra sullâermeneutica delle regole dellâIndice e sui qualificatori. Seguono alcune riflessioni sulla âcontroversia degli storiciâ relativa agli effetti della censura libraria nella societÃ spagnola. LâInquisizione Spagnola fu istituita nel 1478 con la Bolla Exigit sincerae di Papa Sisto IV per controllare la sinceritÃ della fede dei cosiddetti conversos dallâebraismo e dallâIslam, e non per occuparsi in prima linea di censura libraria. IniziÃ²c i suoi lavori solo nel 1480 ed esistette come Istituzione â con una breve interruzione nelle fasi liberali tra il 1813 e il 1820 â fino alla sua soppressione finale il 15 luglio 1834 da parte della reggente MarÃa Cristina. Quando intorno al 1500 il libro a stampa assurse a tipico mezzo di comunicazione sociale nel Rinascimento e le edizioni e lâespansione raggiunsero nuove dimensioni, divenne chiaro alle istituzioni pubbliche ed ecclesiastiche la necessitÃ di esercitare un certo influsso. Durante il Quinto Concilio Lateranense Leo X varÃ² come noto, nel 1515, la Bolla Inter sollicitudines che concesse ai vescovi il privilegio di rilasciare il permesso di stampare, mentre allâInquisizione fu affidato il conÂtrollo del mercato di libri a posteriori. Anche se ci furono ogni tanto conflitti tra i due tribunali della censura â non da ultimo perchÃ© lâInquisizione aspirava ad espandere le sue competenze e ad essere coinvolta nel rilascio dei permessi di stampa â si puÃ² dire che questa divisione di compiti fu in gran parte osservata. Allo stesso tempo ambedue le attivitÃ devono esser definite come comÂplementan, perchÃ© il funzionamento scorrevole della censura statale ed ecclesiastica presuppone uno scopo comune: tenere libera la Spagna da tutto quello che possa andar contro gli interessi dello Stato e della Chiesa.

Apart from considering the origin and mechanism of book censorship in Spain as well as the current state of research the present essay concentrates on the hermeneutics of the Index rules and the qualificators. Furthermore, the âHistoriansâ Quarrelâ and the effects of book censorship on the Spanish society are dealt with. The starting point of the Spanish Inquisition lies in the bull Exigit sincerae, presented by Pope Sixtus IV in 1478, which aimed at controlling the sincerity of faith of the so called conversos from Judaism and from Islam and was primarily not meant to deal with book censorship. It only took up work in 1480 and existed as an institution â with a short interruption in the liberal phases from 1813 to 1820 â until its final suspension by the regent MarÃa Cristina on 15th July 1834. When the printed book became the typical medium of social communication during the Renaissance around the year 1500 and editions and expansion attained new dimensions, public and ecclesiastic instituÂtions realized the necessity to exert a certain control. During the Fifth Lateran Council Leo X (1513-1521) passed the bull Inter sollicitudines, which gave bishops the privilege to grant printing licenses. Catholic imperial Spain, however, took the liberty to apply different rules. Here, the State appropriated the control over printing licences, while the Inquisition was only admitted to control the book market a posteriori. Even though there were conflicts between those two censoring institutions â not only for the Inquisition struggled to enlarge its area of competences and to engage itself in the procedures of printing licences â it is appropriate to say that the task sharing has been maintained as far as possible. Nevertheless, both activities need to be regarded as complementary, as the smooth working of public and ecclesiastic book censorship presupposes a common goal: to keep Spain free from everything that might possibly work against the interests of the State and the Church.
