Problem-based learning (PBL) in the instruction of a laboratory course has been implemented over a period of four years. The most important learning objective of the course was to teach the students to apply the knowledge they had learned earlier. PBL was introduced because there was a clear need to activate studentsâ learning and support their individual thinking instead of allowing them to just follow the given work instructions. Based on the constructivist theory, learning is made through knowledge building and PBL with group work has been seen as a good way to activate prior knowledge, build theory and apply skills needed in engineering work. The development of PBL in this course was done gradually during the four years, by gathering ideas from student feedback and gaining experience through evaluating the studentsâ learning outcomes. The PBL approach was seen as advantageous by both students and the teacher. Students were motivated by the possibility of using their own thinking and working in groups, even if group work caused some scheduling problems. From the teacherâs perspective, students learn more by discussing the given problem and planning the needed experiments than by just repeating the experiments described in the instructions. A better understanding of the subject matter was especially seen in the written reports; where the discussion of results and the conclusions were more thoughtful than in previous years when the course was taught by conventional instruction.
