A longitudinal comparative study was initiated at Aalborg University (AAU), Denmark with the purpose to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of individual and group project exams. This paper presents the result of a survey carried out over a period of three years at the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine at AAU. The survey captured opinions and observations from students, faculty examiners as well as external examiners. The results were that the individual assessment system came out considerably weaker than group assessment in testing essential project skills and going into depth with the students' understanding and that the majority of both students and examiners preferred a group based project exam rather than an individual project exam.
