Problem-Based Learning is one of the most researched pedagogical strategies, yet research on the effectiveness of PBL in comparison to traditional classrooms seems inconclusive. In its first part, this chapter summarizes a meta-synthesis of existing PBL meta-analyses demonstrating strongly the effectiveness of PBL particularly with regard to long-term learning and performance gains. In the second part of this chapter, the authors address questions which aim to highlight drivers and challenges, which seemed to halt large-scale implementation of PBL.
