Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is a comprehensive approach to classroom teaching that is designed to engage students in the investigation of authentic problems. However, great variety exists in its application; while some institutions have wholly embraced the ‘problem based’ method they remain a minority; many more have recently expanded their use of extensive team projects and the divide between the traditional and progressive approaches has become blurred. This paper aims to address the subjective nature of the PBL teaching approach by investigating the teaching procedures in current design projects and establishing metrics of their effectiveness. A quantitative parameter, based on self-directed learning theory, is proposed and used to build a route-map model of the effectiveness of PBL teaching method. Data was collected from three design project modules; two in civil engineering and one in aeronautical engineering. Using the data collected, the authors show the way to a dynamic and controllable optimal teaching framework and discuss its implications.
