Reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as the superoxide anion (O₂^-), hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and hydroxyl radical (HO^-), are highly unstable species with unpaired electrons, capable of initiating oxidative damage. Normally, the generation and scavenging of ROS in body keeps a physiological balance. However, some abnormalities such as disease, damage, transportation and air pollution as well as the chemical toxins will result in over accumulation of ROS, which surpasses the scavenging capability of the body. The disrupted balance is usually called oxidative stress which is closely associated with a series of dysfunctions (Li et al., 2006).

The accumulation of ROS is believed to induce the peroxidative reactions of tissue components such as proteins, DNA and lipids, which subsequently lead to the oxidative damage. In addition, the detrimental effects of oxidative stress on food intake, growth and muscle gain has brought considerable economic loss for the livestock producers. Therefore, a valid approach of preventing animals from oxidative damage has attracted considerable research interests in the world (Wu and Hu, 2005). However, most of current studies about the underlying mechanisms of oxidative stress mainly focused on experimental animals such as the mice and rat, and little are known about the poultry and domestic animals. In this article, we will summarize our current knowledge of oxidative stress in weaned piglets. A better knowledge of the mechanisms will help in proposing new strategies to prevent animals from the oxidative damages.
