Dietary fat supplements rich in medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) and poly-unsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) affect microbial activities, which can be exploited to mitigate ruminal methane emission through a direct effect on rumen methanogens or indirectly through defaunation or reduced substrate degradability. The anti-methanogenic activity of FAs is influenced by their dosage and the basal diet (forage:concentrate). However, the methane inhibitory effect of FA is often associated with negative effects on animal productivity by reduced feed intake and/or substrate degradability. This paper is the synthesis of various studies using methane inhibitory activity of FAs and discusses: a) sources and mode of action of dietary FA, b) methane inhibitory activity of MCFA and PUFA rich fat supplements from in vitro and in vivo studies, c) constraints in using these fat supplements for methane reduction at the expense of animal productivity and d) potential of these fat supplements to improve animal product quality.
