The first limiting nutrient for high yielding dairy cows is glucose. To predict the glucose supply and requirement in the cow a feed evaluation system was developed in which the glucogenic nutrients (GN) from propionic acid, digestible bypass starch and glucogenic amino acids can be calculated. Data for the fermentation and digestibility of the crude protein, starch, sugar and NDF in feedstuffs were based on nylon bag incubations in rumen and intestines. Tabulated values of GN for concentrate ingredients and calculation rules for roughages were developed to calculate GN supply in the ration. The rumen fermentation sub-model was validated using measurements on duodenal flow and volatile fatty acid proportion. The requirement for GN was based on the relationship between GN intake and response in milk yield and composition using feeding trial data. It was concluded that the GN feed evaluation system is a new tool for optimising diets for high yielding dairy cows towards increased milk, protein and fat production and was designed for practical use on farm level.
