Inulin and oligofructose are both prebiotic fibres, selectively fermented by bifidobacteria, a perceived health-promoting genus. Numerous human studies have demonstrated this effect starting from 5 g per day. Data include different age groups, long and short term interventions, and free versus controlled diets. The acidification of the lumen of the colon, by this prebiotic fermentation of inulin and oligofructose, through the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) results in an increased solubilisation of the calcium (Ca) that is present, and makes it candidate for increased absorption. This effect of increased Ca absorption has been demonstrated in numerous animal models receiving inulin and/or oligofructose, including observations of increased Ca density in the animal bones. The increased Ca absorption effect of inulin and oligofructose has been confirmed in healthy individuals in 6 human intervention trials. By modulating the chain length distribution through the development of a new type of fibre, oligofructose-enriched inulin, the minimum effective daily dose (MEDD) to achieve a significant effect has been confirmed at the ingestion of 8 g per day. Even in a study in post-menopausal women, a population group where Ca absorption is compromised, 10 g of this oligofructose-enriched inulin showed significantly improved Ca and Mg absorption levels. Most recently, the Ca absorption after ingestion of 8 g of this new fibre was confirmed in a 1 year intervention study. In addition, the study included measurements of the actual whole body bone mineral density (WBBMD) via DEXA and whole body bone mineral content (WBBMC) at the beginning and at the end of the study.
