Abstract

Questionable authorship: The case of Al-maqá¹£Å«d fÄ« al-á¹£arf attributed to AbÅ« á¸¤anÄ«fa

The composition entitled Al-maqá¹£Å«d fÄ« al-á¹£arf (The Purpose: On Morphology) is a rather late morphological treatise of Arabic, popularly attributed to AbÅ« á¸¤anÄ«fa. Together with its commentaries, this work is available in eight copies in the otherwise small collection of Arabic manuscripts at the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, which is indicative of its relative frequency all over the world. Various manuscripts of the work will be examined in search of textual evidence for the alleged authorship. The data will be compared to Mediaeval biographical and bibliographical sources to establish the possible cause of attributing this treatise to AbÅ« á¸¤anÄ«fa. Since the knowledge of linguisticsâand morphology in particularâwas essential for the study of Islamic law, this textbook might have been used in Hanafite legal schools of the Ottoman Empire. Its relatedness to law is also attested in the first sentence of the actual text which may have led to its being attributed to AbÅ« á¸¤anÄ«fa despite the fact that the authorâs name is not mentioned in the text.
