Abstract

This chapter examines the EU’s comprehensive approach towards mitigating climate change effects in oceans and seas, with a specific focus on maritime transport and energy transition measures. It then discusses the extent to which some of these initiatives align with EU regulations concerning marine biodiversity protection, with the final aim of elucidating the coherence of EU actions in addressing climate change impacts on ocean ecosystems. The EU still needs to find a comprehensive approach to reconcile the trade-off between energy transition and environmental concerns, in order to uphold and ensure environmental integrity and stability. The chapter seeks to contribute to the ongoing debate on sustainable ocean governance by providing insights into the interplay between EU climate change mitigation efforts and marine biodiversity conservation.
