Abstract

This contribution explores the intricate relationship between the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOSC) concerning fisheries management. The FAO, established in 1945 with a mandate to ensure food security and sustainable agriculture, intersects significantly with the LOSC, which serves as the constitutional framework for ocean governance. This paper examines how the FAO operates within the legal parameters set by the LOSC, emphasizing the complementary nature of their roles. The discussion delves into the structure of the LOSC to elucidate the regulatory environment guiding FAO’s actions. Furthermore, it explores FAO’s initiatives, including the adoption of legal instruments, collaboration with Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), and other relevant activities such as private certification schemes and database management. Through this analysis, it becomes evident how the FAO’s work both aligns with and extends the principles established by the LOSC, contributing to the sustainable management of marine resources.
