Abstract

This concluding chapter sums up the lessons that can be learned from the ethnographic work conducted for this book and argues in favour of a relational reading of womenâs rights. It stresses the need to consider womenâs rights within the complex web of relationships in which they are enacted, whether those between individuals in the neighbourhood or between state officials and citizens in the court house. It highlights the many forms of judgements that come into play as womenâs rights are experienced and brought to life. It highlights the close interrelated, creative processes that are involved in both gender and citizenship, which is enabled by the ambiguity that simultaneously causes significant anxiety for legal professionals and litigants alike. The chapter also considers the impact of these ambiguities and anxieties on the state, as the stateâs legitimacy is also being judged in and through these divorce cases.
