This chapter explores the role of compensation payments in divorce cases and how these may, or may not, create a sense of justice for litigants and contribute to the legitimacy of the state. It describes how these financial payments are gendered, as only husbands are expected to pay material compensation. It highlights the frustration that often arises as, in reality, such financial settlements fail to provide litigants with the sense of justice they are seeking for the emotional harm they have experienced in their broken marriage.
