Ã partir de mes recherches doctorales sur le roman historique europÃ©en des premiÃ¨res dÃ©cennies du XIX^e siÃ¨cle, je rÃ©flÃ©chis dans cet article Ã ma position de chercheuse en LittÃ©rature comparÃ©e, Ã la fois Ã la marge et au centre de trois Â«âcommunautÃ©s interprÃ©tativesâÂ» (Stanley Fish), qui sont Ã certains Ã©gards des Â«âcommunautÃ©s imaginÃ©esâÂ» (au sens oÃ¹ lâentend Benedict Anderson)â: communautÃ© nationale oÃ¹ je suis nÃ©cessairement inscrite, communautÃ© reconstituÃ©e du lectorat du roman historique du XIX^e siÃ¨cle et communautÃ© interprÃ©tative en puissance Ã laquelle sâadresse ma recherche. La prise de conscience dâune situation dâÃ©nonciation au croisement de ces diffÃ©rentes communautÃ©s interprÃ©tatives permet de proposer une dÃ©finition de la recherche en LittÃ©rature comparÃ©e comme pratique interprÃ©tative des Åuvres littÃ©raires fondÃ©e sur des premiÃ¨res personnes du pluriel, plutÃ´t que sur une premiÃ¨re personne du singulier.

Abstract

Starting from the example of my doctoral research on the early 19th-century European historical novel, I consider in this article my position as a researcher in Comparative Literature, both at the margin and at the centre of three âinterpretive communitiesâ (Stanley Fish) which are in some respects three âimagined communitiesâ (Benedict Anderson): the imagined community of nations to which I necessarily belong, the 19th-century readership of the historical novel, and the potential interpretive community for which my research is intended. Based on this example, I suggest that the awareness to be situated at the crossroads of different interpretive communities invites us to consider research in Comparative Literature as an interpretive methodology based on first-person plurals rather than on a first-person singular.
