Abstract

This paper introduces and provides an edition of the hitherto unpublished set of historical notes found in the mid-fifteenth-century compendium of Middle English texts extant in London, Wellcome MSÂ 8004. It considers the contents of the notes, which include a brief epitome of universal and English history to 1415 and a synopsis of battles from 1066 to 1424, and highlights their affinity with a small group of short Middle English Chronicles and king lists, particularly the Folger Brief History written in 1442. The study concludes with a reflection on the function of historical material in what is predominantly a medical, astronomical and prognostic manuscript, and cautiously suggests that in addition to teaching readers the main facts of history the notes may have provided a practical digest of historical data to test the prognostic methods outlined elsewhere in the volume. The edition that follows is supplied with full textual and explanatory notes outlining likely sources, such as Ranulph Higdenâs Polychronicon and a version of the Prose Brut.
