Abstract

The Middle English Prose Brut was printed four times between 1480 and 1493: twice by William Caxton in Westminster (1480 and 1482), once by William de Machlinia in London (c. 1486), and finally by Gerard Leeu in Antwerp (1493), in an edition completed shortly after Leeu’s death from a stab wound inflicted by his punch cutter. This study of Gerard Leeu’s edition in relation to its predecessors sheds new light not only on Leeu’s edition, but also on the wider development of printing in English in its earliest decades. It leads us to a more nuanced view of the relations between these three early publishers of works in English, and shows the industry they helped establish to have been more fundamentally Anglo-Dutch in nature than has previously been acknowledged. Finally, the evidence makes it possible to add Gerard Leeu to the list of early publishers of English works in the Dutch Low Countries who not only printed, but personally knew English.
