Abstract

It is usually thought that Jean Froissart, for the pre-1350 history in his Chroniques, relied heavily on Jean le Belâs Chroniques. But on rare occasions he did not. This article notes the distinct differences between Le Belâs and Froissartâs accounts of the naval battle of Sluys, fought in the Flemish port of 1340, where the English fleet, led by EdwardÂ III, ferrying troops across the English Channel encountered a French blockade at Sluys in Flanders. The ensuing naval battle would initiate Edwardâs first major campaign of the Hundred Years War. While Le Belâs report on the battle is short and lacks details, Froissartâs account puts the chronicler directly into the narrationâhe decries naval warfare because there is nowhere to run if one is defeatedâand is filled with many more details. More important for historians of chronicles and their authors is that Froissart rewrote his narrative three times, adding and refocusing on the accountâs âpoint-of-viewâ which may reflect on who patronized him during his writing of different versions of the Chroniques.
