Abstract

Since the first scholarly edition of the oldest surviving version of the Anglo-Norman prose Brut appeared in 2006, scholars (Erik Kooper notable among them) have increasingly traced the chronicle’s presence and influence in late-medieval historiographic works in Anglo-Norman, Middle English and Latin. This essay will focus on one manuscript included in the variants of that edition, Oxford, Bodleian Libraries, MS Wood empt. 8, whose version of the text is clearly not a direct ancestor of the subsequent dominant Anglo-Norman and Middle English versions. At the time, it appeared to be a unique outlier. Now, with the discovery of another full manuscript of this version, and of its role as a source for other texts, the Wood version can be seen to have had an influence and circulation of its own. This case study helps reveal the variety of ways in which Brut texts were deployed and reworked in the fourteenth and early fifteenth century, as well as the challenges of evaluating textual traditions on the basis of surviving manuscripts that may or may not be representative.
