Abstract

J.L. Austin’s speech act theory distinguishes between constative and performative utterances, dividing the latter into the subcategories perlocution and illocution, an approach that has since been applied far beyond its original locus in linguistics. Taking examples from fifteenth-century Scottish chronicles, this paper explores how introducing a three-fold distinction between constative, perlocutionary and illocutionary chronicling might more clearly reveal the chronicler reporting, persuading and acting on the political stage.
